Founded in the 1960s, Casa de Macau in Lisbon is one of the first civil society organizations in Portugal dedicated to fostering Luso-Asian cultural exchange. Located in Alvalade, the house is a "hidden gem" where five centuries of Portuguese presence in Asia are testified not through distant museum objects, but through artworks integrated into a warm, "homie" environment open to all. The garden, home to a colony of wild cats, houses a replica of Macau’s landmark Avalokiteshvara (Kun Iam) statue - a work by Portuguese sculptor Cristina Rocha Leiria, commissioned by Macau’s last Portuguese government, featuring a face that symbolizes the Luso-Chinese encounter. The House’s mission is to serve as a symbolic gateway where historical heritage meets contemporary social practice in a living, community-driven space.
