Established in 1978 as Galerie Fred Jahn, the gallery has evolved over nearly five decades, shaped by continuity and a close engagement with contemporary art. Since 2017, it operates under the name Jahn und Jahn, with spaces in Munich and, more recently, in Lisbon.

Fred Jahn began his work in the art world in the mid-1960s at Heiner Friedrich’s gallery, contributing to early exhibitions of American artists in Europe. In 1978, he founded Galerie Fred Jahn, with a strong focus on works on paper and long-standing collaborations with artists such as Georg Baselitz, Per Kirkeby, Gerhard Richter, Fred Sandback, Isa Genzken, among others.

In 2008, Matthias Jahn opened his own space in Munich, presenting a younger generation of artists, initially from the milieu around Günther Förg, later expanding into broader international contexts. The two galleries came together in 2017 to form Jahn und Jahn. Since then, the program has been shown in the gallery’s courtyard space on Baaderstraße 56 and, from 2022, also in Lisbon, on Rua de São Bernardo in the Estrela district.

Tim Geissler joined as a partner in 2018, bringing new perspectives.

Jahn und Jahn represents artists across generations. Its program builds connections between historical and contemporary positions, encouraging dialogue between past and present. The gallery also continues its publishing activity, which began in the late 1970s, with a focus on exhibition catalogues and editions.

The foundation remains unchanged, a commitment to the visual language of contemporary art through precision, continuity, and close collaboration.
