MONITOR is a contemporary art gallery founded by Paola Capata in Rome in 2003. Since its beginning, the gallery has aimed to offer artists a space and environment in which experimental and original exhibitions can be created.
During its early years, MONITOR worked with a strong focus on emerging international artists, interested in various artistic practices, from installation to photography, with an emphasis on video work. Since then, the gallery has expanded its scope and work with artists, now representing a diverse, international, and transgenerational group of artists, and presenting a program with a particular interest in painting.
In 2014, MONITOR opened a pop-up space in New York, developing a series of exhibitions and artist residency projects that lasted until the following year. In 2017, the gallery expanded internationally once again, opening its Lisbon gallery, which has been in operation ever since. Two years later, in 2019, MONITOR opened a new space in Pereto, a small town in the Italian countryside, aiming to decentralize contemporary art.
