3+1 Arte Contemporânea is pleased to present the second solo exhibition of Maria Laet (Rio de Janeiro, 1982). Maria Laet ́s works are informed by actions and the results of subtle gestures and interventions in her multidisciplinarian practice. The various mediums employed act as conduits and platforms for Laet ́s processes, which convey her intentions and reveal the act as an archive. There is a fragility evoked in her works which are often captured in a palette of black & white that in turn, highlights the seemingly minimalist pieces. Thus, the resulting works command attention to consider the physicality and non-physicality of them.

Galeria Belo-Galsterer will host a brunch on Saturday morning together with artists Joana Gomes and Daniela Krtsch, who will comment on their solo exhibitions Double Poetics and Jorinde & Joringel present at the gallery from October 17 on. After the brunch and tour at the gallery, we will move to the artists’ studios and have a look behind the scenes.

“This exhibition stands at an x-mark of a story, at the intersection of many pathways where, borrowing the idea of serendipity, coincides the clues and signs laid out by a group of artists. Through photography, sculpture, drawing, film and installation they display common interests which conjure resistance movements, social representation, research processes and networks of solidarity in the contemporary world.“

Belo Campo is an epiphyte space organized by Adrien Missika, hosted by Galeria Francisco Fino and located in the gallery’s basement since 2017.

Which way the wind blows is an exhibition that seeks to address some of the human relations in today’s Mediterranean Sea, as seen in a possible distant future. A sea haunted by myths, Gods, legends, wars and sunken dreams, but which sells its idyllic image to the tourism business. A divided sea, between its legacy and future, between religions, modern and ancient myths and economical and social status. A sea divided between tourism and drowned migrants and asylum seekers. A sea that is Nostrum and Vostrum, but also the ground of huge humanitarian crisis. A visual narrative on the migrant crisis without representing the migrant crisis. This is an emphasization of a contemporary society that chooses to ignore the visual and political evidence, and prefers to believe that Gods can turn people into stone.

Balcony Gallery is going to present a collective exhibition to celebrate its second anniversary from 20 September to 20 November curated by Tiago Alexandre – who is also one of the artists represented by the gallery. We will host an informal guided tour with the artist Tiago Alexandre or by the gallery director, who also happens to be the curator. Visitors will have the opportunity to have a chat with him and the director about the gallery, the exhibition, the artists and their works.

Quoting Tiago Alexandre,
When I think about the two year anniversary of my partnership with Balcony, I cannot forget that, around this time seven years ago, I was presenting my first proposal as curator – an adventure – The Pé de Cabra Artist’s Residence in 2012.
For that project, I assembled a group of artists I liked and to whom I proposed a challenge. This time, the challenge is placed on me by the Gallery: to make a show with the artists I like best. (In a funny way, the story is repeating itself).
I invited some artists but I didn’t look at their art pieces as I know their work almost by heart.
I invented a way to bring them to my atelier – deaf, blind and quiet.
They trusted me and let me do my work. They assumed that I wouldn’t leave, and I didn’t.

These days, when traditional artistic mediums are being pushed to the margins of art making in favor of digital art, virtual reality, and animation (and when sculptures, when they are created, are often fabricated using sophisticated technical processes such as 3D printing rather than handmade), this exhibition encourages sculpture to take a self-reflective look at itself by presenting the works as relics of a bygone time in a cultural history museum. The show is curated by Jens Hoffmann, and represents the third time the curator has brought to life the Museum of Modern Art and Western Antiquities, whose title is a reference to Marcel Broodthaers’s Museum of Modern Art, Department of Eagles (1968–72). In the same spirit, the ambition is to create a kind of imaginary museum that exists alternately in the real world and in our imagination. — Jens Hoffmann

For Lisbon Art Weekend 2019, Madragoa will present Middle Finger Pedestrians the second solo exhibition by Lisbon-based artist Gonçalo Preto at the gallery. 

Gonçalo Preto (Lisbon, Portugal, 1991) lives and works in Lisbon. He first studied Product Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, then in 2012 he studied at the Kassel Kunsthochschule, Kassel, Germany and completed his education studying Drawing and Painting at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, USA.
