Established in 1999 in Lisbon, Galeria Filomena Soares is a gallery devoted to contemporary artistic production, fostering a productive dialogue between artists, curators and institutions working in the Portuguese and international art scenes.
Now in its third decade, the gallery advances its mission through a robust program, comprising exhibitions, artist projects, institutional collaborations, performances, and interdisciplinary projects, often inviting renowned curators, writers and scholars to cooperate, as in the past David Rimanelli, Rosa Martinez, Jurgen Bock or David Rosenberg.
Committed to art bookmaking, Galeria Filomena Soares has published several monographs, artist’s books, exhibition catalogues, and limited editions in close collaboration with artists and institutions.
Galeria Filomena Soares works with a diverse array of artists, including Andreia Santana, Carlos Motta, Christine Streuli, Dias & Riedweg, Didier Faustino, Délio Jasse, Edgar Martins, Fernanda Fragateiro, Fredrik Værslev, Ghada Amer, Günther Förg, Helena Almeida, Herbert Brandl, Imi Knoebel, João Penalva, Kiluanji Kia Henda, Letícia Ramos, Miguel Rio Branco, Pedro Barateiro, Peter Zimmermann, Rui Chafes, Sara Bichão, Shirin Neshat and Tracey Moffatt, as well as with the estates of Dan Graham and Helena Almeida.
Latest exhibitions in the gallery include Herbert Brandl’s “Music for Trees and Mountains”, Pedro Barateiro’s “Poems for Tourists”, Christian Philipp Müller’s “Global Portraits”, and Christine Streuli’s “Preconceptions”.
Today, the gallery is located in the east side of Lisbon, an area that was, for decades, an industrial pole of great importance to the city’s growth and is today one of its largest urban reconversion sites. The gallery’s space (approx. 1000m2) includes two exhibition rooms with different sizes and functionalities, allowing it to host a wide range of compelling projects.
